How To Start a STEMpathize Chapter

STEP 1. Connect With the STEMpathize Team

Before starting your chapter, reach out to STEMpathize leadership for initial guidance and resources.

Ask for things like:

  • Access to past curriculum

  • Advice on running workshops

  • Support during the early planning stages

Starting a chapter is much easier when you learn from others who have done it before. Use existing materials as a starting point, then adapt them to your school.

STEP 2. Get School Approval & Recruit a Faculty Advisor

Every school is unique, so make sure to follow your school’s official club creation process. This usually involves paperwork and administrative approval.

Next, find a faculty advisor. You may need to pitch the chapter to multiple teachers before someone agrees.

Look for a teacher who:

  • Believes in STEM education

  • Supports outreach and leadership

  • Is willing to guide your chapter

Persistence is key, don’t get discouraged if it takes a few tries to secure an advisor.

STEP 3. Build a Leadership Structure

A strong club starts with stronger leadership. In the beginning, keep leadership roles clear and simple.

Instead of creating too many complex roles, start with traditional positions like:

  • President

  • Vice President

  • Treasurer

  • Secretary

Clear leadership prevents confusion, divides up workload, and helps the chapter run smoothly. As your chapter grows, you can expand roles if needed.

STEP 4. Secure a School Partner & Plan Your First Workshop

This is the most important step. Your impact begins when you partner with a local school.

Start outreach early on by:

  • Emailing schools

  • Using teacher or member connections

  • Following up consistently

It may take time to get a response. Stay persistent.

Once you secure a partner, plan your first workshop. It doesn’t have to be perfect, use the recourses you were given by STEMpathize. Each workshop will improve as you gain experience.

STEP 5. Recruit & Fundraise

Promote your chapter through:

  • Club fairs

  • School Announcements

  • Flyers

  • Direct Outreach (Word of Mouth)

You will need to fundraise for workshop materials. Common options include:

  • Selling food at school events or bake sales

  • Start an online fundraiser

  • Participating in school-sponsored fundraisers
